John Ringling, of circus fame, fell so much in love with the Sarasota area after visiting, that he built a home along the Sarasota Bay. He then moved the winter headquarters of the famous Ringling Brothers Circus to Sarasota. He purchased St. Armands Key in 1917, envisioning a mix of residential homes and a shopping circle. He used his circus elephants to haul the heavy materials that were used to build a bridge to the island. This was the beginning of St Armands Circle.
